Paul Millsap

I keep meaning to post on some things. Like, whats up with that first start of Anthony morrow. I'm glad to see Dwayne Wade back to his old self, maybe better. How 'bout Devin Harris, Danny Granger. I also been meaning to post on the pistons, but i don't want to type for 10 hours, too much to say. I will say this though, I predicted Stuckey replacing Billups as the starter a while back:D Didn't happen the way i though, but it happened.

I just noticed Paul Millsap has been starting the last 11 games. Didn't see him lately, but i know several of us like him. So, how has he been doing in his last 11 games/starts? 17.5 points and 11.6 per game! Damn, he's really ball'n, jsut 6'8" too. I had thought of him as being a lot like Maxiel. But, i guess he is a lot better than Maxy now.

More Conspiracy Theories

So, I don't know if you've been paying attention, but last season's Celtic's schedule has been given to this season's Lakers.

8 of their first 13 in LA
9 of their next 13 are .500 or less

The League is generating confidence and momentum for the Lakers. And everyone here knows confidence and momentum wins in basketball.

Its just crappy that we can't get a balance playing field to work in.

Basketball!

I think everyone that wants too, should give some updates on their perspective team, or any other teams they want to do. We also need a predictions thread, sometime soon. I'd like to hear the insider fan thoughts on SA, HOU, LAL, and any other i may be forgetting.

Detroit Pistons- Michael Curry does seem like a good coach. He is obsessed with defense and man to man. And you are gonna see very little zone from the pistons this year. We'll see in the playoffs how good he really is. Given time, i think he has the potential to be a top coach. He entered the nba on a 10-day player contract. Adn they say he was immediately assuming leadership roles among the team.

Stone fans are still split on Rasheed. Half (probably more than half) think he is a cancer, and half think, he will be focused this year. Every year, Pistons are trying to get him on the block more. but not this year. Curry intends to having him floating out even more often, and keeping the post area that much more open for drives and other bigs to work. Like the coach, rasheed is an x factor. We'll see what we got come playoffs.

Rip is rip, chauncey is chauncey, prince is prince.

The most interesting thing is Pistons are giving the very raw Amir Johnson the start. He lead nba in block per minute and rebounds too, (i hear, im not looking this up). I imagine he also lead in fouls per minute. He is learning how to curve his aggressiveness just a tad so he can stay in the game 20-25 minute a night. Not sure how many teams he would be a starter on in the NBA. It'll be very interesting to see if he rises to the challenge. Word from staff is he had the best camp on the team. And a great preseason.

Mcdyess is on season 4 (i think) with the pistons. He was definately better coming off the bench than starting, plus he is more comfortable coming off the bench. That is why he is there this year. He may even get mroe minutes than amir, they'll prob be pretty even.

Jason maxiell i think kinda plateaued last year. He was effective, but it seemed like he finally stopped progressing at a rapid rate. He is working on shooting, especially freethrows. I never thought, before the year, that amir would start over maxiell. I don't know if they jsut think amir will be better than Jason or they just like how the game changes when jason comes on the court as a reserve.

Rodney Stucky is awesome. I can't wait to see him in his first full season! He jsut needs to improve on floor management. When to shoot, when to set up others, etc. He will be playing 25 minutes a game probably.

Well, thats the top 8 players, the guys that'll have 20 or more minutes a night.

As always, i think the pistons have an alright chance. if i had to make a prediction, i think it is not too unsafe to say conference finals loss, lol. I still think we are better than Lebron and the Lebronaneers. I hear peopel saying philly is better too. I'll be pretty embarresed if that happens. i won't bite a fishes head off, or anythign like that though.

peace, and good luck to all your shitty teams ya suckas!

How's Yao?

I love Yao Ming. When Shaq was in his final 2 yrs w/ the Lakers, I'd have traded him + the rest of the team (minus Kobe) for Yao. He does seem to be jinxed by his gifts though. I'm just curious what Rocket's fans think. I know you love the guy but is he right for Adelman? The only similarities I could think of was Vlade/CWebb on the Kings. Vlade was old & CWebb had horrible knees so neither one was Carl Lewis but they had some success.

I saw this from Simmons today in his Fantasy column:

42. Yao Ming - Forget that he missed at least 25 games in each of the past three seasons or that supertall guys age worse than porn stars or that he doesn't fit in with the speed/defense/athleticism/flexibility Rockets at all unless they're planning on using him the way Cleveland uses Ilgauskas ... which means Yao will play 25 minutes a game, slow them down and force them to play the wrong style. I happened to catch him lumbering around in a preseason game and sent the following texts to torture my buddy who loves the Rockets: "When did you sign Gheorghe Muresan?" ... "Is there any reason you guys dipped his sneakers in concrete?" ... "He's going to get dunked on so many times this year that we should start calling him 'The Big Coffee.'" ... "Can you have Yao's translator send me the Chinese letters for 'Ewing Theory?'"
My buddy's eventual response: "White flag!"

OKC Thunder

http://www.nba.com/thunder/

Let me be the first tosay. That is a retarded team name. What are they? American Gladiators?

I wish i could booooo them everytime i see them (for the rest of my life.) But since really, i'd just be booing the team, and they have nothing to do with it, it'd be out of place and mean.

Coach K quote

Once or twice we have discussed something like, how responsible is a head coach for motivating his team. I've been watching this Road to Redemption Series on ESPN.com. And i am realizing Coack K is a master of motivation. So, using that segway, i'm posting a really funny quote i just heard. K is talking to the team about when they are old. (this is sometime after they lost to greece at world championship in 2006)

"At one time in your life, you're gonna have maybe an artificial hip or a knee, or your gonna be losing your hair. And, there is gonna be a grandson sitting on your lap. And saying, "hey poppi," or, "grandad, weren't you in the olympics?"

"Yeah."

"What did you do?"

"Well son, we lost to that greek team."

"You lost to the greeks?"

"..."

"..Where's grandma?"

New Rockets

So, here is next year's Rockets if nothing unforseen happens.

Starting:

Yao
Scola
Battier
McGrady
Alston

Bench:

Mutumbo
Landry
Artest
Barry
Brooks

Also on the bench:

Francis
Head
Hayes
Novak

I mean, I just can't believe this team. It looks so damn solid. Look at all that defense! Teams will be hard pressed to score at all against either the starters or the bench. In fact, I think the bench is actually better at D. Furthermore, I can't stress the benefits of adding Brent Barry. That 3pt threat is going to really help Yao get his MVP trophy that he's deserved, but didn't get due to injury.

They can go big. They can go small. This is surely their best chance to make a run at a championship that they've had since Barkley was on the team.

I think one of the key aspects to my excitement is the fact that this is the second year under this coach. If you were watching last year, they started off crappy cause they didn't know his system. I've heard players say it takes 2 years to really get his offense.

Also, the other elite teams haven't really gotten better since last year.

60 wins anyone?

brawl at the palace, ho-hum

I was out of town a while but i kept thinking about htings i would post. Especially during all the free agent moves. Why would anyone wanna play for the clippers. Everytime they get hot, nothing really happens and they are soon a losing or medicre club again. (I'm looking at you Byron Davis.) But i can never be bothered, i'll dicuss that junk at BC.

Detroit has been connected to several NBA stars in trade talks they definately went after Davis and Carmelo and even posey. But they were at least rumored to have talked to several others too. Now that everyones been signed, i guess they may trade during the season. Or just dream the popular dream of buying a Bronky Kong in 2010.

Actually the reason i hopped on here is cause i got cheated by the WNBA today (or maybe boradcast television). And there is no one around to bother with my grievence. I have not really watch a lot of WNBA. But i did follow Detroit Shocks run to the finals last year, and actually found it pretty entertaining. And it is funny how similar they are to the pistons. But i noticed a Shock game was on last night so i decided to recorded it. I heard that there was a brawl during the game, but i didnt' hear who won. So i was excited to watch an entertaining circus. "What luck," i thought, i record one random game and i get a brawl.

Well, i watched it all, then with 3 1/2 minutes on the game clock. My recording ended>.< I had forgotten the sports rule of always recording past the scheduled time cause every game runs over. Well the brawl was in the final couple minutes. So i spent an hour watching Detroit get beat, then didn't even see the close finish (detroit was down by 21, only lost by 3) or the brawl.

There. That was a nice little vent. Screw everybody!! See you all in a month. I'll be the one pointing and laughing at Haircut as he barfs bass. Who is gonna catch that sucker? I am a good fisherman, but I have spent 28 years really not wanting to touch them. Fish are gross.

Thursday, June 19, 2008

Keep it coming.

Well, I just can't stop talking about these refs. But neither can anyone else.

Great quote here:

"Stern seems happy to live with the shady perceptions as long as playoff ratings are up and the league can pimp a renewed Lakers-Celtics rivalry. Anyone with a wager slip knew the Lakers would get significantly friendlier foul calls at home on Tuesday night. And sure enough, the Lakers enjoyed a 22-12 foul advantage at the half, and they finished the game with a 34-22 edge.
I'm not saying the Lakers didn't outplay the Celtics fairly in Game 3, but when the league's officiating becomes that predictable, how is it not a problem? "

"As the cynics around the league would say, there's a reason every team, and every player, has one particular referee they simply can't stand."

"One occasion, it's Joey Crawford ejecting Tim Duncan for laughing. Another time, it's Ron Garretson ejecting Rasheed Wallace for staring."
The nightmarish reality that hangs over what was supposed to be Stern's dream Finals is that public confidence in NBA officiating is maybe even lower now than it was when Donaghy's betting on games and association with known gamblers were first revealed last summer.
"Good luck trying to convince disgruntled fans on both coasts that Donaghy's claims that league officials direct their referees "to manipulate games" to "boost ticket sales and television ratings" have no merit. "
"Two examples from Texas: All of San Antonio is convinced that the Spurs have no shot at a W if Joey Crawford is in the building, just as anyone in Dallas can tell you that the Mark Cuban-era Mavs have a 2-14 record when Danny Crawford has a whistle. "
"The larger point here is that nobody has ever known what is and what isn't a foul in professional basketball."

Better do someting Sterny.

kgstrodamus

i've gotta give credit to boston for some great defense (at times) but for me, this series is just further proof that something is amiss in the NBA. i feel like the C's were clearly not the best team in the league this year, but here they are winning the finals.
now i know shashers not gonna argue, he's too busy eating a live fish at boys club (gross!) but i'd like to hear from you Cs fans.

can you REALLY say that you think they are the best team in the league this year? i felt like at times, they had a VERY sound defensive unit, but just as often, they look confused or not focused. no?

i mean, richard called it out at the beginning of the season. as soon as they got KG, richard said "rings". (bravo) but i think even richard would agree that their schedule was total baloney.
does that mean anything to Cs fans/players/the rest of the world? if not, how do i make sure my team has a baloney schedule next year? =)
and if so, what penalty is there for having a bs schedule? its not like the rings are going to sparkle less brightly just because the guys wearing em beat a bunch of paper opponents to get into the finals. i feel like im taking crazy pills. didn't the HAWKS repeatedly abuse the Cs in ATL?
the hawks. the atlanta isotopes. and how long was it before the Cs won a road game this post season? 3rd rd?

(for this next line, pretend it's seinfeld saying it. just humor me)
and whats the deal with these NBA referees!?

am i alone here or is it getting worse? something's gotta give. i thought jimi/shasher brought up a good point the other day:
there's easily 5 or 6 blown calls a game (i'd say thats conservative, wouldn't you?) and most games are decided by less than 12 pts.
so, if the avg margin of error is as big or bigger than the avg margin of victory, doesn't that mean it's broken?
and if anybody tells me it will all come out in the wash, i will vomit on my keyboard right now.

what do you assholes think? are the Cs legitimate champs? is the NBA broke? is the reffing fair/consistent enough? is it at least as fair/consistent as other major sports?

i know this is a long and scatterbrained post, but i figure it's prolly my last one of the season, so i'm going out with a bang.

Canseco'esque?

Patrick - you're going to love this one. Maybe this'll get some attention maybe it won't. I don't know that corruption will change things but I freakin' hope so.

This corroborates all conspiracy theories for some & for others is a guy trying to minimize his jail sentence by lying about the NBA.

Sadly... after a slimeball started the whole steroids/hgh talk in baseball, I'm inclined to believe him.

Prettiest Play Evar?

So, what is the prettiest play ever?

Jimi and I were talking about this while watching a surprisingly entertaining Finals game 1.

Jordan's going up and then, for no particular reason, switching hands.

Jordan - "I just want you guys to know, that I am completely fucking around here."

Also in the list:

Dwight's rediculus full extension dunk.
Dr J's rock the baby.
Garnett's idea of a block where he just grabs the hook shot out of the guy's hand.

Lets hear em.

Tuesday, June 3, 2008

Ummm, Finals?

I'm not terribly excited about this either. Seems the League got their way in the end, what with two designer teams getting trades that didn't seem all on the up and up. Call me a conspiracy theorist, cause I am, but this is not the kind of NBA I care for. Maybe I should just start rooting for the Celtics. Nah, I'll just ignore the NBA till next season.

I just hope I don't have to bite a fish.

real quick one

don't know if you guys saw this. we may be losing one of our best announcers. now what happens if gundy gets lured outta the booth?!

if we lose gundy AND collins, i'm only gonna be able to unmute games when hubie is around.

"Flopping Sucks" - NBA Fan

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3416579

Finally, the league is doing something about the recent trend towards flopping. Now, I hate flopping floppers so much that I've even had to stop wearing my favorite summer footwear. What? Now, its not really the player's fault. When you get to be this competitive, you are almost obligated to exploit these dumbass officials. But at least the league is doing something about it.

Now, if they can just add another official...or use robots or something....

shmoey shmawford

ok this post covers a few topics so... shmoey shmawford was the best i could do. forgive me.

(in reference to the SAS-LAL gm 4 last night)
i thought doug collins summed it up perfectly with these 2 remarks (paraphrased):
1. the real difference was the energy/offensive rebounding in the first half. the lakers
were getting to all the loose balls and all the off boards.
2. it's a testament to the spurs defense that it was even a close game come 4th Q, because
wow did they suck offensively.

i think the lakers played way more focused and intense ball pretty much throughout the
entire game. i didn't think the spurs were gonna get out played like that, especially at
home (see my spurs in 6 prediction), but if timmy (and brent barry) are the only ones
that are going to show up, they are F'd. i know manu is hurting, but the spurs obviously
need more from their 2nd (?) best player if they're gonna beat good teams in 7 (see box
scores of all the games in this series-if manu AND timmy show up, they win. in fact, see
box scores of all the spurs games with a healthy timmy and manu). i think jeremy correctly
pointed out a few weeks ago that manu would be the real deciding factor. and i think we
are now seeing the truth of that. kudos to the lakers and phil for adjusting properly
when the spurs made moves to take over the game. and kudos to kobe for being a
stinking maniac. bruce played him VERY tight, and he still looked good.
and finally, kudos to fish. if he hadn't decided to jump on brent
barry at the last second, i would have no more ammo to throw at these STUPID FUCKING REFS.

get ready, you stupid horse. i know you've been deceased for some time and you have been
beaten relentlessly for years now, but i got a little something for ya!

when are they going to fix the reffing system? thats 2 times i can remember (you guys?)
in this post-season alone that we've seen terrible calls at the very end of a critical
playoff game that all but seal the playoff fate of the team in question. the spurs were
lucky as hell to be anywhere near the lakers at the end of that game, but who can really
disagree with these statements?:
1.the last play of the game was grossly miscalled.
2.if that last call was made correctly, it would have likely changed the outcome
of a CRITICAL playoff game, and possibly the series (the WC FINALS no less!)

so, do they never call fouls on the last play? (ahem, shasher!) why/why not? should they?

now, you KNOW that stern and his buddies are looking at this and thinking 2 things:
1.everything is falling into place just as we planned. soon, we will reap the rewards
of our labor and our precious celtics/lakers finals will be upon us! (ok, maybe not)
2.ok the spurs just got jobbed, and it was because our reffing system is broke.
how do we prevent that in the future?

at some point, changes are going to HAVE to be made. i think that much is certain. it's
like the camera men sitting on the sidelines right underneath the basket- at some point,
kobe or somebody is gonna break a foot on one of those bastards and then the league will
FINALLY get them off the floor. it's just a matter of time.

and one last thing-how the smell is joey fu#&*$ing crawford the lead official at a
spurs playoff game? can anyone answer that one? wtf?! i don't think they should have
reinstated him. but to reinstate him and the very next season there's blown call like
this in a huge, close spurs playoff game? come on man. come on. seems a little fishy (no pun
intended, i swear!) to me.

LAL-SAS

Game soon, time to get this up.

Well, i am not going against SAS again. So i pick Spurs. They seem to get better as the post-season progresses. JVG said, before lastnights game, that detroit is the best team remaining. I was shocked to hear anyone not from detroit, yet alone someone in media say that.

I would think for sure all media would pick LAL-SAS as good as those two teams have looked. I would say they have been consistant too. Sure, SAS went 7 games, but that was against a very very good team. LAL may not play defense as well as the other three teams, but they still play very good defense, right? And their offense is easily the most in sync. Really, i think i am rather inclined to pick LAL over SAS, but i cannot go against spurs and be wrong yet again.

miami?

so miami has a 25% chance to get the 1st pick this year.
that would put marion, dwade, and a #1 pick on miami next year.
if dwade is healthy, that seems pretty formidable.
thoughts?

Det-Bos

Ahhh, Det, Bos, Lakers, and Spurs. If spurs were, well, one of the teams LAL played every year (houston, pheonix), this would be a real 80s reunion.
=============
I think that somehow, being on the road team in this series is helpful. Here is how it woudl happen if pistons had home court. Pistons blow out game 1. Pistons stop worrying and give away the 2nd game--bolstering Boston's confidence, quelling any on-road doubts. and giving them homecourt for the last 5. Boston feeling good, wins two at home, and closes in 5 or 6.
Here's how it plays out if Boston has homecourt. Detroit steals one on the road. Boston no longer feels invincible at home. Detroit up 2-1 gets soft and loses game 4. Detroit feeling serious after losing at home, gets it back winning in Boston. Detroit goes back home and puts it away in 6.
That was not a prediction, jsut some fun. Of course, I firmly believe we are going to sweep them;D
==========================
Look for Chauncey and Stuckey to dominate Rondo and House, and maybe Cassell if they ever let him play again. Though House has looked really good the last two games, i gotta say.
Maxiell has been off and on lately offensively, maybe guarding Howard was wearing him down. Hopefully he can get his famous energy to return for his usual offensive rebounds and plays to the rim.
Chauncey said his hammy is 100%. But he is the kinda guy that is gonna say that everytime if he is playing. Plus he paused for like two seconds, thinking about it, before saying 100%, hehe. So who knows, we'll see how good it really is.

Boozer and Utah

During that series, especially the last game, he jsut never looked confident. He seemed to either be heistant with the ball, or else forcing up prayers in triple coverage. I was dissapointed, cause i like the booze man, and i wanted to see some higher quality game from him. I know that is largely due to LA defenders like the long and very athletic Odom(man, how times did i see Odom go coast to coast:D); but still, judging by confidence alone, you would think Brewer was the superstar and not Boozer (want is with the beer-themed names?).

I doubt it helped Boozers confidence for the Utah newspapers to have giant frontline headlines calling him out. If i was the head editor, I woudl save that for once Utah is out, if had any care to whether he actually played better or not. Of course, news media in general IS horrible.
=============

If Utah played the whole game like they did the last 6 minutes, that would have been a helluva game. Exciting ending, but i never thought Utah had a chance in heck until they were down by 3 at the very very end. I don't mind they out though. Tthey had to leave b4 the finals; Utah is the one team that ALWAYS destroys the Pistons.
=============
Millsap was awesome this year; jsut like he was last year. I'm still a big fan of him and look foward to watching his game develope some more.

20-1

I know everyone knows this already, but it still needs to be said. The home team is 20-1 in round 2 this year. That is one of the craziest thing i have ever heard. The detroit series had a clear favorite (well, less clear without Billups playing, but still), but in all the other series, before they started, i was not really sure who to pick as the winner, i think i predicted them all as 7 game series.

So, in the 3 series were the teams are relatively well matched, it seems like the only thing that throws off the parity is homecourt. And the games usually aren't event that close. It kinda baffles me. I know home court is big, but i never thoguht it was this big. Like, what is the deal? Why is everyone brick, brick, brick on the road? And swish, swish, swish at home?

Is confidence really that dependent upon homecourt?

Wednesday, May 14, 2008

Delonte West has forced me...

to retract my assertion that the cavs were better last year. he's just what they needed. kudos to whoever made that decision. that guy is bad ass.

Spurs Vs Hornets

What is up with this series? Every game is a blowout.

In game 4, the Spurs' defensive strategy was to let Paul get his, but shut everyone else down.

So, why didn't that work in game 5?

Tuesday, May 13, 2008

SVG

I have been a fan of this guy. But his constant crediting of the refs for his loss lately is driving me crazy. If you saw that last game, Orlando had so many silly mistakes in the 4th quarter. Running out the clock, intentionally, when they were behind. Bending over for a loose ball that Tayshaun dove for, and he was like 3 times further away from it. I silly frutration tech late in the 4th. It goes on really.

He is asking the league now for an explanation of a no call on a blocking foul on the last play of the game. True, in the reg season, it would have been a blocking foul; at least if it was earlier in the game. But these playoffs, no-calls on last plays have been the standard. I have seen the exact same no call a few times now. SVG shoudl know that. Even Lebron, on an extremely similar play had the same thing happen to him. Instead fo crying about it though, he said, i should have made the shot.

In all things, it is important to take responsibility for your current situation. SVG needs to grow up.

i want beantown

I said b4 the playoffs i don't want to play CLE, but now i really want Boston to win. I also really want it to go 7 games, so they still won't have a road win.

Boston's first series, i thought maybe it was just tough shaking off that rust from late season coasting. That, combined with ATL's athleticism. But dang, it seems like they can't ever close out a close game, or of course, win on the road. They can't even get the ball to allen or pierce in the 4th quater. Rondo had the second most shots in their last game; i mean, what are they doing? Where is the coaching to get those guys touches?

Pre-playoffs, i thought detroit would have a good chance against Boston. But now i really like our odds on them. We'd only have to steal one road game, and that'd be a wrap. And detroit plays well on the road. Last game's a good case in point:D
================
FYI-i don't think Billups will be back tonight, but i think he'll be back if it goes 6. Playoff injuries suck. Kobe looked like a cripple last game, albeit, on ethat is awesome at bball. Hope he is alright, too.

Kobe or MJ?

So a lot of folks on the Radio are doing their thing were they say stuff to get a reaction. The latest hot topic is that Kobe is as good as or better than MJ. I call BS. Yet I was talking with a co-worker and he's not quite sure. So I pose the question out there. How does Kobe compare to Jordan?

Here are links to their career stats. I think people forget how good Jordan was during his prime.
http://www.basketballreference.com/players/playerpage.htm?ilkid=JORDAMI01

http://www.basketballreference.com/players/playerpage.htm?ilkid=BRYANKO01

If the Lakers win the championship this year, would he compare then? I say if the Lakers win the next 3 championships, then yes, he's as good as MJ.

Who ya'll watching?

I can't help notice no one is interested in discussing the playoffs any more-i mean, the actual games. I'm just curious what series yous are watching if any. I figure Jeremy is watching LAL, anyone else?

Musical Chairs

Poor Mike D’Antoni. He helped create one of the most exciting products the NBA has seen in the past 20 years (everyone read the Simmons article I assume) and now ‘meddlesome’ Steve Kerr is asking him to practice more defense in practice.

Word is that D’Antoni wants the Chicago job (he interviewed for the Knicks job to push the price up in Chicago). I thought it was pretty funny that they didn’t grant permission for him interview in Toronto (ex Sun’s GM Colangelo hired D’Antoni to begin with). Weird thing about the Chi-town position is that John Paxon is an ex MJ/PhilJ Bull like Kerr. He’s pretty well known to prize defense like Kerr but he still wants to pull the trigger to acquire D’Antoni. What’s Paxon gonna do when D’Antoni’s asking Deng & Heinrich to practice steals as defensive strategy (Karl-esque philosophy)? I’ve also heard that Kerr & Paxon are friends so you know they have to have had conversations about Mike’s recent views of Kerr’s so-called micromanagement.

Kinda goes back to the “Avery is out” post but…

As it seems D’Antoni is determined to flee (like his defense when guarding the lane), who do you think is best suited to take this team to championship level? Is there a better choice at all? Do you think your choice is the same as Kerr’s?

LAL-UTAH

i don't really got anything to say on this series at the moment, just thought we should get it on the boards since the game is about to start.

I'll say LAL in 6.

Mad Max

I'm sure you all have been eagerly awaiting my next pistons-loving post, so without further ado:

Man i love this guy. Maxiell. I still can't believe he came in 9th for 6th man.

I thought Detroit would have to do more doubling than they are used too with howard. They hardly doubled him at all. 4-5 bigs took turns on Howard last night, starting with Jason Maxiell, who i thought was great on howard. Yeah, howard beat him a time or two, but what other 6'7" player could guard Howard single coverage.

Then, in the 4th quarter, Max was doing his Rip impression, draining 15-17 footers.

Detroit was masterful with exploiting matchups, and getting to ball to the right guy last night. Lets hope they keep it up.

After such a good win, detroit better not go into cakewalk mood and make things close.

"Bandwagon Asscats"

Yup, i am on the Hawks bandwagon. ("Bandwagon asscats" is a from a Rasheed qoute last year, i guess he doesn't think high of people that wait for the bandwagons).

Of course they got guys like JJ and J Smith. But Childress has really caught attention for tons of clutch rebounds and some clutch drives to the hoop too. He has great control when he is flying to the basket and slipping around shotblockers.
And then, everyone's new favorite, Zaza Pachulia. Seems like a tough doood, a helluva scrapper, and also seems to be a (or the) emotional leader for the team. I heard last game his dad was a judo champ, so no wonder he doesn't back down from KG.

I think prior to the playoffs, this was the series people were the most comfortable perdicting a sweep in. And now, it is the only series that remains from the first round, the only game 7.

None of the games in boston have been close so far, but ya never know, crazy things can happen in a 7. If Boston moves on, they are gonna have a pretty intereting series with Lebron. I am not even sure which team to favor anymore. With starters like West, Szczerbiak, Old man Wallace, i never thought i would say that.

T-Mac is not Cursed

I know I joke around a lot about T-Mac being cursed but this loss was not his fault. First off, remember that the Rockets were without their highest scorer and starting center. Not having Yao meant that a team with already bad offense just lost a guy that was worth 20 pts and 10 rebounds a game. Not only that, but Rafer Alston was out for 2.75 of the games. Not only does he contribute 15 pts a game but he also helps facilitate the offense and plays good D.

Let's turn the tables for a second. Pretend Yao and Alston are both healthy but Carlos Boozer was out for the season and Deron Williams gets hurt after the first two games and can't play anymore. Is there any way the Jazz still win? Of course not.

Without their starting center AND point guard there's no way Houston can beat a team as good as Utah. No expert picked them to win. What's funny is that even a against a really good Utah team (that's ranked second overall in Hollinger's power rankings) the Rockets still went 6 games and maybe would have won had Alston played all the games. I still think Houston would have beat Dallas or Denver in the first round.

The second point that I would like to make though is that Tracy played exceedingly well this series and I don't think you can honestly blame him for this loss. His numbers for the playoffs were:

Points - 27
Rebounds - 8.2
Assists - 6.8

Compared with LeBron's averages for his series which were:

Points - 29.8
Rebounds - 9.5
Assists - 7.7

So basically Tracy played almost as well as LeBron James. I don't think you can fault him for that. In fact he was about 88% of a LeBron James. And when you look at how much his numbers improved compared to the regular season there is no room to complain. It's not like he's A-Rod, MVP every year in the regular season and then disappears in the playoffs. (Sorry for the baseball reference).

Once thing they mentioned last night is that Tracy in his 7 playoff series has never been on a team seeded above a 5. So, what you're saying is that his teams SHOULD have lost all 7 of those playoff series? They were always the underdog. Granted, this year and last year they actually had a better record than the Jazz. But this year they had tons of injuries and last year they went 7 games against the Jazz with a worse roster.

I don't know if Tracy will ever win a playoff series. Perhaps he is cursed. I would rather think that he's unlucky to keep getting in the playoffs on bad teams, or without a full roster. The Rockets as a team have also lost 7 playoff series in a row. Nobody has said that they're cursed. Is the player cursed or the team? They were losing playoff series before T-Mac got there.

I'm optimistic though. Tracy still has lots of time. Right now he's 28 years old. That gives him 5-7 more quality years. His scoring has declined recently but I think he has become a tremendous passer and plays very good defense (when he's trying).

If I were the other NBA teams I would be very thankful that the Rockets lost Yao Ming . They're going to be a force next season if they can keep this team together.

also, whats up with this bogus suspension?

http://www.nba.com/news/songaila_suspended_080502.html

for those of you that didnt see it, darius songaila was suspended for "punching" lebron in the face.
i was watching it and PLEASE!
i've seen harder hits with a no call, much less suspension.
whats more, it was OBVIOUSLY not intentional.
i think this is one of the stupidest moves i've seen, particularly in light of KGs non suspension for a more deliberate, and harder hit.
the only leg they have to stand on here is that the tap landed on lebron's face. lebron totally overreacted when it happened and so did the announcers (well, one of em). the guy kept talking about how bad of a punch it was, and i seriously thought it was a joke.
i'd like to know what you guys thought of that, cause i'm floored. if it was the other way around, and lebron had accidentally tapped Darius Songwhothehellisthisguya on the cheek, i am certain there is NO WAY he would be suspended. i call BALONEY BEANS!

not sure if you guys heard, but

jeffrey barnes just broke the world record for holding his breath.
he held his breath on the oprah show for 17 minutes.
17 minutes!

DET-ORL

Detroit in 5! Muhahahaha.

(more later)

Pity the Fool!

I keep seeing everybody dissing this haircut. So i had to chime in and say, except for the junk on the sides, that haircut is badass.

Kurt Thomas looks like Jeffrey Barnes

Or is that supposed to be with a "G."

I may be completely crazy, but something about kurt makes me think of barnes when i see him. Probably mostly the eyes. That, and they are both black?

**edit**i guess i shoudl have included a picture, well i am now.

wierd 4th-CLE-WASH

Cleveland was down at the start of the fourth. And near the end of the period, they had taken the lead shooting 18%. It was just freethrow this, freethrow that.

Avery is out.

I can't help but feel sorry for the guy. Was it really his fault? Was it DanTony's fault that the Sun's lost?

I kinda have to say yes. They both failed to adjust their team to their players.

I think a really good example of someone doing just that is Adleman (who, not surprisingly, was my pick for coach of the year). I mean, he lost a 7'6" 20 and 10 guy, and they kept winning. They are giving the Jazz a run for their money with three hobbled guys( alston, tracy, battier)

How are they still winning? Gotta be the coach.

Why didn't the Mavs win? Gotta be the coach...right?

So called ESPN "Experts"

ESPN Playoffs

Today I was looking at ESPN and I noticed they had a piece called the Expert Picks in the playoffs section. So I checked it out to see which teams these so called "experts" picked to advance from the first round.

It was pretty sad. I mean, I think all of our picks are better and we don't watch every game let alone write articles for ESPN. There are 10 experts on the page. I'll go over a few of their "awesome" picks:

7/10 experts picked the Suns to beat the Spurs. Good call fellas. Idiots.

6/10 experts picked Dallas to beat New Orleans. Dallas? Really? Isn't Dallas the team that we were HOPING the Rockets could play in the first round? Hasn't Dallas totally gotten worse since the Kidd trade? Weren't they like 0-10 against the other West teams in the playoffs? Didn't they get beat in the first round last year by Golden State? How the hell could you pick Dallas to beat NO? Especially 6 out of 10 so called Experts.

5/10 experts picked the Wizards to win. This one is not as bad and I know the Wiz could still win, so we'll see. But I'm pretty sure Cleveland has this series in the bag.

6/10 experts picked Detroit to win but in 5 games, which can't happen now. I know what you're saying, "At least they picked Detroit." But how much did we talk about how good Philly was before the playoffs started? Patrick had Detroit in 7 and Jeremy picked them in 6.

The last one I'd like to point out is that all 10 experts picked the Jazz to win. Which, obviously is wrong. Just you wait and see!

rule consistancy

I did not think it was fair last year when PHX lost two guys for a game because they put, like, one foot on the floor after Horry hipchecked Nash. But taht was the rule at the time so i thought, "well, they gotta do it i guess, but they shoudl change that rule of the off season."

The rule was not changed, as far as i know.

Then, in the last BOS-ATL game, there was a a mini skirmish started with Garnett and Zaza. Each team had a guy take a step on the floor, and nothing was done about it. I think they need to officially decide what they are gonna do in that situation. They can't sometimes enforce rule, and others let it slide.

Personally, i think they should basically toss that rule and make judgements on a case by case basis. All 4 people (the two from PHX and the two from that last game) did not really go toward the action, they just kinda took a step from their bench, which is something that actually happenes all the time for various reasons.

But if i was PHX, i would kinda be pissed they got totally screwed by that rule, and then the next guys to do it, were completely let off.

================

One more thing, two guys (Deshawn Stevenson and i forget who else) were fined for what, i think, were called "menacing gestures."

Did anyone see these menacing gestures? I am really curious to know exactly what was done. Just cause i want to know what the heck "menacing Gestures" means.

So if you know what they were, describe for me the gestures in question:D

NOH-SAS

What up! what up! How awesome is this series going to be!? I want to see predictions. Yup, again, i don't care.

I can't decide which idea to go with when predicting. If the spurs play like they did in game 5 i think NOH will take it. NOH plays better D than PHX. SAS is going to need ALL three of the big three-not just a couple of them, like they got away with this game, imo.

But then, how can you argue with SAS's experience. They always know how to get things done. Again, look to game 5. They had a lot of things not working for them, but still they took that game. They complete threw off Nash, he looked like a regular ol' PG in that game. Also, PHX made a lot of careless mistakes down the stretch, but old reliable SAS did not. Offensive sets may not have been pretty, but they took care of the ball throughout the fourth.

I feel like inexperience matters very little to CP. And his mindset is assimiliated by the rest of the team. I guess the question is, can CP be contained. Nash is awesome, and he was contained. I don't know though, i can't see CP going down like that.

So i guess i am going to go with NOH over SAS in this one.
=============

I never seen Nash flop so many times b4. He's been hanging out with Dirk Falldownski too much maybe. Thankfully, none of his silly flops were called. As for dirk in his last game, jeebus, don't even get me started. What does he weigh? like 95 pounds?

NBA, "Feel free to light up"

"NBA players are required to undergo four random tests every season between Oct. 1 and June 30. But a player who tests positive for marijuana is not subjected to his first five-game suspension -- or even public knowledge he has failed a drug test -- until his third failed test. "

I was really surprised to see how lax the NBA is on weed. You are tested 4 times, and you have to fail 3 of them before you get in trouble? Lol, what a deterent.

You don't have to be high to have Weed affect you. It has a very long half-life. Things may feel normal to you, but your thinking and, i imagine, your reactions are still slowed down a bit.

Obviously, you know i don't care if they are baked out of their minds all offseason. But i would not be pleased to hear all the Pistons got really blown some night a day or two before a big game (like say, before game 3 perhaps). It is hard to say exactly what effect it will have on their play, but it would still be enough for me to worry about it.

Mike Woodson

don't know much about ATLs coach, but he's been there 4 years now and every year they do way better than the year before.

Team Year Regular Season Post Season
G W L PCT Finish Result
ATL 2004-05 82 13 69 .159 5th in Southeast Missed Playoffs
ATL 2005-06 82 26 56 .317 5th in Southeast Missed Playoffs
ATL 2006-07 82 30 52 .366 5th in Southeast Missed Playoffs
ATL 2007-08 82 37 45 .451 3rd in Southeast In Progress

but the real reason i'm making this post is because he shaved his head on a bet. he bet his team that if they made the playoffs he would shave his head. they did, and so he did.
now i may be soft on baldys, but that seems ultra cool to me. i wonder how long the bet was standing before they finally made the playoffs. i mean, how often do we see coaches do silly shit like that these days? i like it.

and now i expect jer to explain the origins of the bet and the history behind the relationship between mike woodson and the atlanta hawks. i know you've already researched it man, don't lie. freak.

Detroit FaceMasks

Had to sign in again really quick after seeing this:D I love it!

Playoff Review

So, what has suprised you so far? What has been exactly as you suspected.

Surprised:

Philly and Detroit tied at 2-2
--I have liked Philly's game since January, but I never thought they'd look this good. Even in game 4, they were dominate in the first half.

Boston up 2-1
--Everyone thought they would sweep, and there is no doubt they will still win it, but maybe this will bring people down to earth on the Celtics.

San Antonio up 3-1
--First two games were really close...as expected. Then two blow-outs. Nice effort on game 4, but the Suns really needed to win game 3.

Not surprised:

Lakers up 3-0
--Denver is a head-case. They need to trade someone for someone who will just muscle and not talk.

NO up 3-1
--They've looked really solid. Its too bad Paul won't get MVP, cause he deserves it.

Fat-Time Show

How many years have NBA teams been having fat guys dance (with midriff shirts) for entertainment now? 3 years? Blows my mind.

When the first team organization did it, i thought the natural response would be, "god that was awful; what were they thinking." Instead, it seems to be, "Dang that is cool; we need fat guys dancing at our arena!"

No offense to anyone on this blog that loves dancing fat men.

I heart refs part 2

This was a foul on Scola. No joke.

Tom Thibodeau: Deau'ing the Van Gundy

Anybody heard of Tom Thibodeau? Maybe one of you Rockets fans? Well… I heard someone refer to him as the Celtic’s defensive wiz the other day and that peaked my interest. I just got around to reading a little more about him. Pretty interesting. Sounds like he’s a possibility for the New York job too.

Here’s a few articles that are decent:
Bio1: http://www.nba.com/coachfile/tom_thibodeau/index.html
Bio2: http://www.nba.com/celtics/roster/coaches/tom-thibodeau.html

Rockets’ post Post-Season ’07: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/4819325.html
Move to Boston: http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-28-299/Talking-to-Celtic-Assistant-Coach-Tom-Thibodeau.html
Move to Boston 2: http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/celtics/articles/2007/11/01/thibodeau_is_celtics_minister_of_defense/
Knicks job: http://www.newsday.com/sports/basketball/ny-spknix235660860apr23,0,4802646.story

Looking at his coaching history you gotta know Van Gundy’s philosophies are paramount to him.

It also explains to me why Doc Rivers all of sudden had one of the best defensive teams in modern NBA history when I hadn’t seen any evidence he would (or could) concentrate so heavily on it before the season. I tried to find any evidence that Ainge made the hire/choice but I doubt a good organization would admit to any such thing for fear of demeaning the head coach.

Just out of curiosity I checked and the 2007-08 Boston Celtics held their opponents to an average FG% under .420 (.419). Discounting the strike year (‘98-’99) and another anomaly season (’03-’04 – first season the zone was allowed?), they’re only the 5th team since 1980 to accomplish that feat.

The other 4: 1997 Spurs, 1999 Lakers, 2000 Knicks, 2000 Spurs.

What a difference a starter makes.

8-14 from the field
4-8 from 3pt
5 assists
and only 1 TO
But what he really brought was the fact that Utah could no longer double and triple team Tracy all game long. So, Tracy finally made a shot in the 4th q.
I guess I was way off on the home team winning every game.
Did yall see that fan get kicked out? Thats the first time I've ever seen that.

No Bynum

I predicted the Lakers would go to the finals assuming Bynum would come back.

"Lakers coach Phil Jackson acknowledged Monday for the first time that injured center Andrew Bynum's chances of playing again this season were 'remote.'"

To me, this throws a big problem in the Lakers plans.

How big of an impact do yall think this will have?

beating dead horses

I'm sorry, i can't seem to leave it alone. But haircut, have you seen Dwight Howards stats so far this postseason. Say "uncle."

I heart refs

Doubt you guys watched the houston utah game, but once again, a flop changed the game. AK threw his arms up, and it was enough to get a call from the ref when it was an off the ball foul with 40 seconds to go in a play off game where Houston was down 3 and shooting a three pointer, which went in.

I just wish they would let em play. I couldn't even watch the Was-Cle game cause it was halted every other play because of some call.

Let em play!

Jeff Van Gundy

Ever since he was fired, i been enjoying his commentary. I don't think i knew anything about his personality when he was a coach. But now i have learned what a goofy bastard he is. I mean that in a good way. He is always saying rediculous things. And i love how anytime he thinks someone says something stupid, he completely calls them out.

He joking cuts himself down a lot too, which is pretty funny.

DET-PHI

Alright, i think i have cooled down enough to talk about the game now.

And thanks for not rubbing it in; i know it must have been thought of;D

This is what DET fans dreaded. After two playoff runs where the major problem was lack of focus, playing down to the opponents lv, etc, we like to believe that the Pistons have learned their lesson and that kinda mentality is behind them. Well, in all appearances that was exactly what they did yet again.

They started off posting up 'Sheed and the other players as well, over and over. And it was working well. Halftime we were up 13; and, the pistons came out jacking up threes. They did not return to what had gotten them that lead until they were losing.

Flip seems to know his stuff to me, But i think it has to be said that he is not good at rallying the troops in the way that people like Pat Rilley can. I mean, i can't know for sure where the problem lies.

I wonder how Larry Brown would react to the players joking around with the 76er staff throughout the game. I guareetee Bill Laimbeer was rolling over in his grave when he saw 'sheed joking around with 76ers with like less than 30 seconds left in the game.

I think sportsmanship is all well and good; but, the pistons need to act like cold blooded killers out there, not like attendees at a box social.

Here is the silver lining, though it requires a a bit of extreme optimism to see it. Maybe, just maybe, this loss will wake everybody up; and, from here on out they will play to their potential.

I have horrible focus being ADD and all. But i am sure i would not have the trouble sticking to gameplans that Detroit seems to have.

SAS-PHX

Incredible first game. I got a few things to touch on.

First a question. Those of yous who watched, did you have trouble hearing the commentators? I have noticed this a lot last couple years, and it seems like it is always on ABC i have this problem. Never have this on problem on TNT; the game earlier on ESPN was fine. I have a theory ABC turns up the level on the arena sounds to help "bring the viewer into the arena." When the crowd is loud i can't hear nothing they say, when the crowd is quiet, it can still be tricky.
======

Mainly there are just some specific plays i am curious about. In the 4th, Parker had the ball and Nash on him at the top of the key. Parker faked a pass left, and Nash completely left the ball to cover Finely who was wide open for a three. Maybe Nash bit on the fake initially, but he just kept running, all the way to Finley. Why would Nash leave the ball? i know it is important to not leave a man open for three, but isn't it more important to guard the guy with the ball? Anyone got a theory for why he would do that? I saw someone do the same thing against Detroit like a month ago. With the same result--uncontested layup.

In overtime ginoboli drove and threw up a runner. Shot went long and hit the far side of the backboard and Ginoboli got his own rebound, missed again; Thomas missed a tip-in; then, Duncan made the tip-in--which amounted to a huge basket. On manu's first shot, I saw three angles and saw no one else appear to hit the ball, and the ball did not hit the rim, which is a travel. I was shocked the Refs didn't notice the obvious travel, don't think the commentators noticed it either. Am i missing something here? Was that somehow legal? Did anyone notice that play?

Now for some accolades: Damn, how awesome were Duncan and Manu. That three pointer from Timmy was one of the greatest things i've ever seen. I was laughing my ass off. PHX should have watched the all-star skills competition; those SAS bigs can shoot threes, lol. And Manu from the point Parker followed out to the end, was just rediculous. He drove right to the hoop every possesion, at least a couple times right on Shaq. They had no answer whatsoever. Manu went left each time too, lol, they still couldnt' stop him.

How can anyone think NFL is better than NBA is beside me.

Tyson Chandler-My Buddy

This is really funny-from his blog. What a cool uncle. The team he is talking about at start is Dallas.
===============================

"It's comical to me that they wanted to play us. First of all, it's comical to me that you're scared of a team, and say that you don't want to play them.

But it reminds me of when I was little. I begged for the My Buddy doll, begged for the My Buddy doll. I kept asking, "Ma, get me the My Buddy. Ma, get me the My Buddy." But my mom couldn't really afford it, so she couldn't get it for me at that time.

So, I kept at it. "Ma, get me a My Buddy. Every other kid got a My Buddy. Mom, I never get anything!" Just making my mom feel bad.

So, my uncle told my mom, "I'll fix this." I didn't know my uncle told my mom that, but he came over with this video and pops it in the machine. I'm like, "Ah, My Buddy!" And it turns out it was the Chucky movie.

All the next week, I'm telling my mom, "Please, don't get me My Buddy. Please, don't get me My Buddy."

So sometimes, what you think you really want, you don't really want. The Mavericks think they want us, and they asked for us, and we ain't gonna be My Buddy. They're gonna get Chucky."--Tyson Chandler, from his blog.

CLE-WASH

I was about to post this on the last thread, but it is Tangent City in there. So i'm moving it here to try and help keep things a little organzied.

"WSH-CLE: CLE IN 6 (I know the Cavs suck but there's no way LeBron lets them lose in the first round)" - Jimi

You are probably right man. I am torn. The Cavs are so bad, but Lebron is so good.

The most productive player from that trade has been Delonte West with 10 pts and 4 assists. Ben Wallace has had some nice moments, but his back causes him a lot of problems. Gibson just got back from an ankle injury that is probably still sore. Z is always sore.

Is this Lebron's 3rd or 4th season? I can't believe the crap the Cavs have surrounded him with. I hope he is not as loyal as KG, and i hope he stays in the East.

Predictions... that are actually predictable.

Screw awards and no more trying luck our way into predicting regular season seedings. Hell, reg.seas.seedings only matter so that we actually have somewhere to start when we're doing playoff match ups anyhow.

Now that we have those brackets, let's see everyone's tourney card, along w/ number of games it'll take to win each series.

FYI:
1v8 plays 4v5
3v6 plays 2v7

The matchups (bracket ordered):

EAST
Celtics v Hawks
Cavs v Wizards
Magic v Raptors
Pistons v Sixers

WEST
Lakers v Nuggets
Jazz v Rockets
Hornets v Mavericks
Spurs v Suns

Not sure I have any but I guueeeeesss random predictions are ok too... Finals MVP? Player X disappears? LBJ has X games that will be Instant Classics? Anyone make a name for themselves (i.e. Deron last year)? Any other big story/headline?

Ginoboli!! 6th man?

I love Ginoboli, but it just seems kinda wrong for him to get 6th man. He just barely misses having the 2nd most minutes on his team (Duncan-2,624, Parker-2,283, Ginoboli-2,273). And he is the Spurs leading scorer. Shouldn't the 6th man have less minutes than most of the starters?

I kinda thought the 6th man award was an accolade for guys who are not the stars of their teams. While i don't agree, i have heard media say that Ginoboli is the best player on their team these days. So give him the "6th man award?" For people like Ginoboli, their are accolades like the all-star game and all-nba honors.

I guess really, all that 6th man means is they come off the bench. Which Manu does, so i 'spose i'm all wrong; still, it doesn't quite sit right with me.

All-Funny Name : First Team

These are names that have entertained me all season.
A name becomes less funny as you get used to it, so people like Nene Hilario did not make the cut. Say these names out loud, i think that makes them better.

1-Ira Newble
2-Royal Ivey (dirty groin puncher)
3-Zaza Pachulia
4-Von Wafer
5-Quincy Douby
6-Adonal Foyal

I was shooting for five names, but i like all of these.

West is still crazy

If you thought things would shake out by now, you'd be wrong.

If the Hornets win tonight(vs Clippers) and the Rockets(vs Clippers), Jazz(vs Spurs) and Suns(vs Portland) win Wednesday, there would be a four-way tie with the Jazz, Rockets, Spurs and Suns.

A 4 way tie!!!

The Jazz have the tie-breaker against the Rockets and Suns.
The Rockets have the tie-breaker against the Suns and Spurs due to conference record.
The Suns have the tie-breaker against the Spurs.

In that case, the Jazz move up to the third seed.
The Rockets become the fourth seed.
The Suns go to fifth place.
The Spurs fall to sixth place.

So, the Spurs game against the Jazz could either swing them to 3rd place or 6th place! That is totally nuts! And this isn't even because of the divisional stupidness.

Oklahoma Supersonics.

I'm amazed at this story. The arrogance of these Oklahoma folks is amazing. I hope The Commish squashes them, yet I don't know if he actually can. Fortunately, I know David Stern is way too smart and never believed the crap these guys were emailing him.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ap-supersonics-e-mails&prov=ap&type=lgns

The thing I don't get is have these owners actually been to Seattle? I mean, seriously, Oklahoma is pretty friggin lame. Plus, do they actually think that an NBA free agent is going want to sign with them and move to OKC? The 2 lamest locations used to be Milwaukee or Salt Lake, but those are looking mighty fine compared to Oklahoma.

Another rant about seeding and awards.

5th place with 2nd place record
So, if you look at the standings today, you will find the Rockets in 5th place. That's 5th place, with the 2nd best record. Now, San Antonio has tie braker over them for divisional play. At least, that's what I'm assuming cause Houston has the better Conference play and they are 2-2 against each other.

So, why aren't they at least 3rd with the 2nd best record? Thats because the Lakers and Jazz are gauranteed a top 4 seed. Of course, we all knew that. But I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that this is the first time EVAR that the top 3 teams have come from the same division. Now, they changed the rules before because the Southwest division had the top 2 teams. Think they'll change it again, cause dammit, having the top 2 teams wasn't good enough for the SW. They had to go and F things up.

Rookie of the Year
Who deserves this title? Really. Who? What does it mean to be rookie of the year? Does it mean that you are gonna be awesome a few years down the road? Is it a prediciton trophy? We think this guy has the most potential, here, have a trophy.

Or, is it the guy who has made the biggest impact on a team with the best play. Is it the rookie playing the best ball, THIS year.

If its the first, then it should be Durant. Cause that guy is gonna be good. Gonna be. Not is. Cause he really isn't that good. I've started watching Seattle games recently, cause I wanted to know if he deserved all this hype. Yea, that display against Denver was great, but actually he wasn't even the best Sonic that game.

Call me a homer, cause I am, but Scola is player better ball, having a bigger impact, with less minutes, on a better team than any other rookie.

Recap: Predictions, Midseason

jake said...
midseason highlights-lebron is a maniacdunks-D howard. i heard he's gonna move the goal up to 12 ft MVP-KG (arrrgh! i really wanna go CP, but they have a really tough schedule from here on out, and i doubt their record will be good enough to get looked at for MVP. also, have you looked at BOS schedule!? crap!)

3 CLE
4 ORL
5 TOR
6 WAS
7 ATL
8 SPRINGFIELD ISOTOPES (i know i used this joke before, but seriously, who else is in the east? i put the Hawks on there!)

WEST (i really think that HOU, LAL, and PHX are extreme wildcards this season. such big IFs on all those teams. these are tough predictions to make)
1 DAL
2 SAS
3 LAL
4 NOH
5 HOU (i've been listening to patrick too much.)
6 PHX
7 UTA
8 DEN
FINALS

finals MVP-Nash
darkhorse-still UTAH. GO JAZZ!if i didn't like steve kerr so much, i would consider the matrix/shaq trade the worst move EVER (for PHX). but i really think he has a legitimate point, and i like steve kerr a lot. so there.

Mid-season highlights? I wish D-wade was 100%. Most my favorite plays usually involve him. Member last year when, at half court, some guy tried to cut him offt, and he dribbled through the guys legs, then immediately went into an alley-oop to Shaq.Though i know Bron and Kobe do amazing things every game. Right now, i am thinking more of some good games, like the recent hornets-pheonix one. Offhand, i did like marcus camby taking the ball all the way down in transition in traffic. He went right around a steal attempt with a sweet behind-the-back dribble, then, assisted with a behind the back pass. Pretty good stuff for a defensive specialist center.
MVP-too easily garnett, unless things go a different direction next half.
Coach-Portland's coach maybe? Is that Sam Vincent? I guess the other two i would go with at this point are whoever coahces Hornets (i guess i just kinda give the award to the teams that seem better than was expected of them. I don't really know much about their actual coaching). And then Doc, like jake said.I love Dwight, but moving the goal is cheating. I going to just lay a hoop on the ground and show off my new sweet dunk. Next year, i am going to throw a hoop from an airplane, then, i am going to jump out after it, flipping and spinning, and stuff. Upon catching up to the rim, i'll deliver a dunk God told be about while i was atop a mountain in Nepal. The strong will rejoice and the weak will cry.

West-Could be anything
The East is their worst ever this year. I get off topic here so i'm making another post on East.
Finals
MVP: B-B-Billups. Bite Me!:) Last year i kept saying SA was going to win it. So i gotta say Detroit is this time.
I still say Utah in west for darkhorse, and well, anyteam in the east beside the TOP two would be a dark horse. How bout...Washington. The got some upside. Two allstars, and a third coming back.

jake said...
isn't that kind of cheating, tom? picking teams is fun! the whole point is that you can't just say "could be anything"come on man.on the other hand, i couldn't agree with you more about most of these things. i certainly agree that BOS and DET are the only 2 legitimate contenders outta the Least (love that one). it's almost as if Chauncey was there that night that i was dogging him at the cabin and he got pissed. ever since then, he's been playing the best ball of his life! way to go chauncey!
GO ISOTOPES!

dullstone said...
Oh, i let him know what this fool jake was going on about at the cabin.I guess i did kinda miss the point here. I'll try and put up some real seedings b4 allstar break ends. BTW, Detroit has 3 all-stars. Booyah! And, of course, you know they still feel slighted.

And since Bos has no competition over there, there is no reason why they won't continue their winning ways.COY - Byron Scott. NoH has really impressed me this year. Tom, did you just look at the standings in the west and copy them? Have you been paying att to Houston's play of late? Hottest team in the league next to your Pistons. And if yall think my Hou prediction is crazy, look at the standings. They are only 1.5 games out of 4th place. Like I said, I think NoH are the most sound team in the league. Lakers are looking freaking good since getting Pau. I'm with Pop, this trade should have been vetoed.Spurs are good, but with the Parker injury they have been playing confused basketball. They should have held onto Beno. Damon S. hasn't helped them.Pheonix is going to fall hard cause Shaq won't play more than 10 more games. Dallas is a ? due to this Kidd trade. They could move way up.
Golden State is still impressive. They lose games they shouldn't, but when they are on, they are tough to beat.
Denver doesn't make the playoffs. There is just too much competition and they aren't that good. I'd talk about the East, but as tom put it, they suck. I think the Pistons are better than the Celts, but they too are losing games they shouldn't.

2nd round losers:

I really think Houston could beat NO, but I don't want to look like too much of a homer. They are 12-1 since getting Tracy back, and that loss was to Utah without Yao.

revised insult to patrick:did you look at NOH schedule? sorry dude, there's no way they're finishing with the best record.too hard

dullstone said...
No, I didn't copy the standings. There was complaining that people didn't make predictions, so i did. I really don't have a lot to go off of. I mainly watch piston games. And they mainly play the east. I had not heard that houston is the hottest team in NBA:D How nice. I eventually told myself i gotta choose 2 of these three--DEN, HOU, GSW--for the West. Even though Denver is an effed up team. Crazy amount of talent in starting five, absolutely crazy. But they have mental defects or something. I'll never understand. Either, way i had to say that that much talent will get to the playoffs.
GSW, well, they just seem like a team that has the passion when they need it. I feel like, if it is the end of the season, and they need to close out with x bunch of wins to make the playofffs, they could do it.
As for houston, forgive me, but they seem to fall short when all the pressure is on them. Of course, i hardly watch houston, and admit i really don't know them. But like i said, i had to pick someone, and it was either pick teams for BS reasons or no reasons. Like, another thing i did was make sure LAL was above PHX, cause i feel like LAL always owns PHX. And i think they will more so this year, if both teams have full healthy rosters. As though their opposition refects their regular season success. But i had to go off of something.Take these rankings with a grain of salt.BTW, my dallas ranking is based on the Kidd going there. I don't see how Atlanta could make the playoffs--even in the east.
oh, random FYI,
among Shaq's first 5games as a sun, if he comes back next game, he will play against Lakers, Boston, Detroit, and New Orleans. Trail by fire.

Patrick said...
I'm going to go look at remaining schedules in the near future. I hadn't looked at NoH's. I do know that Houston's is easier than Denver and Golden State's.I've said it before, schedule and injuries have a bigger inpact on record than anything. ANYTHING!

Patrick said...
Yea, Tom, I would say Houston is probably a hard team to know right now. Hardest schedule in the league for the first 2 monthes. Then lost Tracy to injury for 17 games. Throw that on top of a new coach with an entirely different system that Van Gundy's.However, they have pulled it together recently and have a better record in 08 than anyone except for the Jazz.

Recap: Predictions, Preseason

Patrick said...
Western Champs: I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say the Rockets. I know! It really is a long shot. They have to develop chemistry pretty quickly, but they have probably the deepest roster in the league.
Eastern Champs: BullsDeng is tha shit. I doubt the Cs will do much of anything. And who else is there? The Cavs. But, I'm picking the Bulls.
NBA Champs: Rockets! Wishful thinking, but you heard it here first.
MVP: NashHe deserved it last year, and he'll deserve it again this year.

Rockets have a monster regular season (lose to PHX or SAN in playoffs): SAN WIN #5.3 more predictions:'if' pick #1: IF Timmy is hurt in/around the playoffs (which seems like a decent possibility to me for some reason), it's PHX in the West, beating DET in the Finals). 'if' pick #2: IF Kobe goes to Chi-town, Bulls in the East (losing to Spurs in the Finals).'the Dark Horse': I hope they suck as much as they did last year, and it's hard to justify any team with two all stars as a dark horse but nobody seems to be thinking much about them. They have the potential (however unlikely that they reach it) to beat any team in a series (except the Spurs): MIA

Patrick said...
Oooh, I like the dark horse prediction!
Clearly there won't be a dark horse in the west. So, I'm gonna put my dark horse in the east as well: Orlando
Howard is gonna be even better this year, and Lewis is a haus. If they get hot near the playoffs, they could make some noise.

Quick Post About Strength of Schedule

Has anyone looked at Hollinger's Power Rankings?

Apparently Patrick was right in saying that Houston has had a tough schedule and Boston's schedule is a joke.

If you sort the teams by SOS (Strength of Schedule) you'll note that Boston has had the 4th easiest schedule (average win percentage of opponents was .490) and Houston has had THE HARDEST schedule (average win percentage of opponents was .516).

The only teams with an easier schedule than Boston are the Hawks, Knicks and Nets.

Jeez.

Who would you pick first? (revisited)

age old question, where do you guys weigh in?
you get to pick first, out of all the dudes in the NBA. who do you pick?

all this talk of MVPs has me thinking... who would i rather have to build a team around? could i pick cp or bron instead of yao or d howard? jesus what about kobe? how can you NOT pick him? i dunno

i think i'd go CP. if i gotta pick one, i guess i'll take the PG. strange, i think bron and kobe may be better athletes/dunkers/monsters but i think i'd have to go with either Yaoward or CP just cause i think their positions are more critical. i dunno. for me it's a really hard question, and i'm eager to hear your thoughts.

ps don't forget about ray allen.

Speaking of Thornton

Just incase anyone missed this this...

If this lines up I am a lucky bastard

----------- pos min fgm-a 3pm-a ftm-a +/- off def tot ast pf st to bs ba pts
A. Thornton F 44:17.13-23..3-6..10-12..+12..2...1...3...2..1..5..3..0..0..39

I guess they been letting him start lately. 20 of those points came in the 4th.

Random thoughts

Boston Band Wagon
All you Boston lovers are way off. They suck, and they won't get out of the second round. Beating Pheonix means very little a day after they lose to Philly. How is it that the Pheonix game gets so much hype, but noone talk about how they let Philly go on a 16-0 run?

Barkley does it again
Just when I started to respect Barkley's opinion again, he goes and say something exceedingly stupid. "Houston will struggle to make the playoffs. They will only win 5 more games." Hells bells Charles! They've already won 2 since he said this, and their up-coming schedule is thus:

San Antonio
Sacramento
Portland
Seattle
LA Clippers
Phoenix
Denver
Utah
LA Clippers

I can see losing to SA, Pheonix, and Utah...maybe even Denver. But come on, that is not a hard schedule, and they are in 2nd place!

Tsk Tsk Kobe

With his ejection against Bobcats, Kobe has entered the realm of the elite complainers. With the new rule put in place this year, for each technical he recieves from now on, he will be suspended for one game. Does anyone know if this extends into the playoffs?

Fav 5 Young guys
Monte Ellis - Dang that guy is fast
Luis Scola - Never gives up
Leon Powe - He produces without mistakes
Carl Landry - Professional dunker
Spencer Hawes - 7 footer with a nice jumper

Who are your favorite younguns?

dang

the celtics really smashed phx last night. don't know if any of you guys caught that game, but i have a few comments about it...

1)even though they appear to suck REALLY bad (especially last night), watching them still scares me. i'm pretty sure amare is back to 100%, maybe 110. last few games i've seen him in, he's been looking incredible. of course the shaq thing is still a huge IF for me, but the potential upside is ridiculous. IF they pull their $hit together, i still think they will smash everyone.

2)for the first time this season, i was really impressed with BOS. not just KG, but the whole team was playing GREAT defense and it seemed like nobody could miss a shot (not like they were really being defended, but still :). i've seen them do well, and i've seen KG go bonkers occasionally, but last night the whole team was on FIRE. i still wouldn't bet on them beating a healthy west champ BUT i felt that after watching that game, they really deserve some props. they all played some fantastic defense.

a while ago, tom mentioned that he liked the Cs chances cause KG was so hungry/excited about winning and it would rub off on his team. i felt like last night, this was exactly the case. i really felt like he led them to that victory and to that killer mindset they were in.

this post was going to be : Dang
KG good

but then i started rambling

76s, a threat?

I have see them play only like once this season. But after hearing a couple sportcasters say they been playing as good as anyone lately, i'd thought i check there recent record.
I hope this cut and paste isn't too sloppy.

Here is their last 23 games, of which they have won 18. Philly is eastern so of course some of the wins are against reallly bad teams. But they have had some quality wins too. There's a four game stretch where they beat DET, CHI, SAS, and DEN. Then they just beat Boston last night- with a big 4th quarter comeback i might add.

Who knows what kinda playoff matchup 76's would be, but at least they are making the east a tad more competitive. Who knows, they may make a good series with someone. Looks like first round they will prob play either orlando (3 vs 6) or Cleveland ( 4 vs 5). I could see CLEV being too worried about BOS and DET and dropping a quick couple games to philly:) Howard though (it looks like), crushes Philly inside.
