Fantasy Team NBA

I'm a huge proponent of team chemistry, especially in the NBA, so it got me to thinking. The All-Star game is fun to watch but I honestly believe you're never seeing a team that would great. If you're a GM and had a dream team to make up (of active NBA players), who would be your starting 5 and backup 5?

Starters:
C- Tim Duncan
PF- Dirk Novitski
SF- Lebron James
SG- Josh Howard
PG- Kirk Hinrick

Bench:
C- Dwight Howard
PF- Kevin Garnett
SF- Lamar Odom
SG- Shane Battier
PG- Chauncy Billups

Andrei Kirilenko
Elton Brand
Dwayne Wade
Kobe Bryant

I tried my hardest to avoid too much ego and to make sure that all players would play defense (even though Dirk's D is ugly he tries hard). The last few are honorable mention though I'd be hesitant with Kobe; the only reason he's not throwing tantrums this year is because he's the only real star on his team. Don't know if he'd coexist well on this team.

With the exception of Dirk, again, maybe this could be our Team USA? Anyone want to poke holes?

I'm gonna have to poke a huge hole. Where is steve nash? Why do you have hinrich in there?

I like the idea though. Here is mine.

Starters:
C- Yao Ming
PF- Tim Duncan
SF- Lebron James
SG- Dwane Wade
PG- Steve Nash

Bench:
C- Dwight Howard
PF- Carlos Boozer
SF- Lamar Odom
SG- Shane Battier
PG- Jason Kidd

I considered nash and I like nash a lot but I've seen two separate interviews with him where he denegrates defense. He's terrible at it and what's more, he doesn't try hardly at all on the defensive end.

yea i second that. you don't want the mvp? i know his d kind of sucks, but come on dude. and also- did you dq yao due to him not being active, or you just don't want him?

and patrick- you don't want KG? i love shane battier and boozer as much as the next guy, but...its KG.

and what about tmac? if we're talking about the tmac of right now, i think he's a shoe in, but i can understand why you wouldnt want to pick him up.

i like both of your line ups though i think i would have the same starting 5 as patrick, but my bench would be a hybrid

C-Yao
PF-Timmy
SF-Lebron
SG-Dwade
PG-Nash

Bench
C-Dwight
PF-KG
SF-Dirk
SG-Tmac
PG-Billups

I left T-Mac and KG out because I was trying to avoid egos. You gotta have some role players in order to build chemistry.

Role players! ha!

It was just how I'd imagine them playing as a team. I like nash but he's only the MVP because he can make players w/ stats like 5pt/2rb/1assist look like they're a lot better than they are. His talent is undeniable but he's also a product of D'Antoni's offense; one that allows him to showcase his talent. I mean, there was NEVER talk of him being MVP when he was in Dallas but they ran a lot too. He's good but he fit perfect w/ D'Antoi. Finally, back to the team chemistry thing; he just runs way to much for the likes of how I imagine the team playin; especially one w/ Tim. If I dropped Tim for another forward like Kirilenko, they could run a little more.

I really do LOVE Yao. Seriously one of my favorite players of all time but it was a tossup between him and Dirk (sliding Tim to PF if I picked him up) and I think Dirk's phenomenal jumpshot is incredibly very important to clearing one of the other team's bigs away from the basket which nullifies their presence down low for slashers.

Tmac... sheesh. There are way to many 'ifs' with him. He's incredible when he's on and I hope he stays playing this way all season because I love it but he's so streaky. Whether it's mental or physical, or mental feeding off of the physical he just doesn't seem to bring it every night. He's been injured way too much and he was talking about quiting and playing baseball just last month. No thanks. Best wishes to him though.

I'm gonna have to second what you said about tmac, but I can't agree with you about yao and steve.

Of course, that seems obvious by the fact that I didn't put dirk in my lineup though. Guy plays sub par D and while his shot is awesome, he doesn't really compare to yao...to me.

you're right, steve wouln't be mvp unless he was on the suns right now...but he is still better than every other pg in the league.

Here's a question...who do you have to Coach?

I've gotta say either Pop, Avery, or Gund. You gotta have a defensive minded coach.

one thing that really pisses me off about coach pop is that he pretends like timmy is a center and now everyone else sees him as a center. he's so stinking good that he can pull it off and still have great numbers, but i beleive his game is best at PF and i NEED a true center on my dream team to take some of that pressure off of him. he's constantly getting blocked and getting scored on because he's forced to guard the biggest, strongest guy on the opposing team. i want yao to do that because that's what he's best at and i want timmy to go back to what he does best: true PF.

your points (no pun intended) on nash are well taken. i believe you are correct about steve being a product of mike d'antoni's (marquez noticed something funny- he's the one coach with 3 first names) offensive scheme. i don't think he would work out as well on a team that followed a slower pace. that is, i don't think he would be the OBVIOUS mvp of the league. i still think he would be unarguably the best PG in the league. but even if his D is lackluster, i still need him on my team if only for his insane shot %s and unequaled court vision. i can handle having one defensive weakness on my team (PG may be the only position i could say that about) when i've got the kind of help down low that timmy and yao would provide.
as far as tmac- man i hear you and i struggled with all the 'ifs' also. but looking at the way he's playing RIGHT NOW i just can't pass him up. his vision is too good and when he's on he's possibly the most unstoppable guy to ever touch a ball.
which brings me to how much it pains me to keep kobe off my roster. i think there's no real explanation needed, but damn. i almost picked him just on the principle of 'i don't want to have to play against him'.
and as much as i hate dirk, his shot is too f ing pretty. and as we discovered earlier this season, 'he clearly has an adamantium skeleton' which could come in handy.
this isn't so much trying to poke holes in your arguments as just explain my decisions. i think your positions are sound. in fact, it's probably wise to pass on tmac. but yao? i gotta have yao.
