Trade Tracy?

I actually don't think they should trade him, but here are some possible trades found on ESPN.

Which would you do?

To Dallas: Tracy McGrady, Steve Francis, and Carl Landry for Jason Terry, Jerry Stackhouse, and Maurice Ager.
To Denver: Straight up for Allen Iverson.
To Indiana: Tracy McGrady, Rafer Alston, Steve Francis, and Carl Landry for Jermaine O'Neal, Jamaal Tinsley, and Stephen Graham.
To the Clippers: Tracy McGrady, Luther Head, and Carl Landry for Corey Maggette, Cuttino Mobley, and Dan Dickau.
To the Nets: Tracy McGrady and Kirk Snyder for Richard Jefferson, Jamaal Magloire, and Antoine Wright.
Or another Nets trade: Tracy McGrady and Steve Francis for Vince Carter and Jamaal Magloire.
To the Hornets: Tracy McGrady and Carl Landry for Peja Stojakovic, Ryan Bowen, and Rasual Butler.
To the Suns: Tracy McGrady and Aaron Brooks for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks.
To the Kings: Tracy McGrady, Shane Battier, Kirk Snyder, and Aaron Brooks for Mike Bibby, Ron Artest, Kenny Thomas, and Francisco Garcia.
To the Jazz: Tracy McGrady and Carl Landry for Andrei Kirilenko and Morris Almond.

great post! trade that bastard!

if denver would give up AI, i'd do that in a heartbeat.

not sure about the rest of those...
i'm anti:
jason terry, jerry stackhouse

jermaine o'neal

vince carter

so those are off the table for me, and also, any deal that has shane battier leaving the rockets is a nogo.

i've talked with patrick and jeremy about this: REVAMP THE ROCKETS

keep:
yao
chuck hayes
scola
battier
(maybe luther head, aaron brooks)

trade:
everyone else

get:
bad ass PG (or at least above avg)
clones of battier, scola, and chuck hayes

that's my dream rockets team right there, but i guess i could settle for AI

no?

Like I said, I don't want to trade him, but if they did, I would be ok with AI

or

Tracy McGrady, Rafer Alston, Steve Francis, and Carl Landry for Jermaine O'Neal, Jamaal Tinsley, and Stephen Graham.

O'Neal would work really well next to Yao, and Tinsley is a good point.

I see this from both perspectives really.

I can certainly see why they want to dish Tracy. 63 million over the next 3 years is extremely restrictive to a GM (and very overpriced for what your getting); I'd certainly make it known to other GMs he's not off limits. He's also talented enough that you may find someone willing to pay for him.

In all likelihood though, I think you see something similar to the Kobe (non)deal. Teams know that you don't value him too much (& many will be fearful of his contract themselves) so they're not going to offer you equal value. If you're willing to take back less, you might be able to find some bargains. See the recent trades of Ray Allen, Vince Carter, & Allen Iverson for examples. You may very well be able to pull in a decent guy & a great draft pick from a flailing team. If you don't want that, you may end up in a situation like the Lakers where it's better to just stay pat & bank on the fact that Adelman really hasn't had an opportunity to get TMac adjusted yet.

If I'm HOU, my priorities are PG & defensive PF &, as I see it anyhow, if I'm the non-HOU GM, there are only a 2-3 scenarios of those you listed that I'd consider. Most of them are asking too much (note that you don't want to trade him so your valuation of TMac is higher than many). New Orleans would definitely like your scenario (if only to dish Peja's contract) but I don't think they're capable of taking on Tracy's in return... they're losing money badly right now & doubt they'd be willing to gamble, financially, at this point. If it weren't for that, I'd say they'd do it (but don't know if Houston would).

The 3 most intriguing are: Clips, Suns, Kings

The Clips would do it if only to get TMac in L.A. Their starting 5 next year could be: Kaman, Brand, Thorton, McGrady, & Livingston. That starting 5, if they could pull the chemistry together, would rival almost anyone's in the league. 3 big assumptions though - Thorton matures quickly (not too much of a stretch considering he played all 4 years in college), Livingston in young enough to survive (as Jake put it) knee replacement surgery, & chemistry. I think this one is actually the most realistic as the Clips feel like they've made out like bandits & the Rockets are satisfied with the quality of players they get in return. Personally, I don't think HOU would do it. (as an afterthought, wouldn't it be a fun fact to see Francis & Mobley swapped considering their tight friendship before?).

That Kings one is a monster. Bibby is the big prize for HOU there; he played his best years in the NBA (so far at least) under Adelman. Artest has only 1/2 season w/ him & Garcia only his rookie year. I don't know how to make the $ work but no way would the Kings do this one unless you dropped Artest or Garcia from the package. I think, even that, though, would be a fantastic trade for HOU (though I'd have an impossible time actually pulling the trigger on anything that sends Battier elsewhere).

And the Suns... If Kerr hadn't become GM last year, I'd think that this would have much higher potential for happening considering Marion's attitude preseason. I've read a few times that Kerr is not looking to shop Marion as much as he is willing to part w/ Stoudemire. He is a huge fan of defense & is convinced that they need a defensive force down low to keep other teams honest in the paint (he'd LOVE Tyson Chandler). Marion=great defense & Tracy=average. Suns are definitely looking to get a better Nash backup though & if Kerr believes Brooks is the answer (which Banks obviously isn't, for them at least), he may consider this. I don't see him as a gambling man but if he thinks he could trade Tmac away for the defensive big he needs down the road, he might pull the trigger. I see this one as the most fair for both teams.

Finally, I have to believe you're not a fan of Jason Kidd. You put together two trades w/ the Nets (another side note: one of which would do Tmac for Vince, who are cousins), really need a quality PG & you didn't try for JKidd (who's also been pouting a lot in the past year so is definitely on the block). Tmac & Jkidd have very similar salaries so they'd trade straight up but the Rockets need a PF of which the Nets have 2 good young guys (Josh Boone & Sean Williams) and Krstic. If they still like Krstic as much as they have in the past two seasons, he's not going anywhere but that would mean they'd be more likely to trade Boone or Williams. Both would be great as far as I'm concerned. Boone is more of a scorer & Williams is better defensively. I'd rather have Williams so I'll put him in my scenario but you'd likely have to take whichever the Nets are less interested in.

So do this trade and both teams seem happy to me.

To Nets: Tracy, Brooks, & (MJames or RAlston) for JKidd, Sean Williams, & Jason Collins.

There are a few other options but this gives the Nets a few incentives: A young replacement for Kidd, their choice of veteran PG for a couple of seasons, and jettisoning Collins' salary. Although HOU probably doesn't want Collins, he's another 6 fouls that HOU can use to keep Yao out of foul trouble in the West Playoffs.

In the end... odds are that Tracy just stays for now.

I like your Nets trade actually. I would probably do that. Keep in mind, those weren't my trades. They were some guy on ESPN's trades. I believe they all worked out financially, though I didn't do the math.

Jeremy. Get a fucking column somewhere!
