what the f?

i've never seen a more clear cut case of the refs being full of shit.
for those of you that missed the DAL SAS game yesterday, here's my recap:
spurs have a comfortable lead at the end of 3 quarters, and then timmy gets ejected from the game (while he's sitting on the bench) for laughing.
after timmy's ejection, the spurs lose their lead and the game.
the end.
first of all, how can you eject someone while they're sitting on the bench? (keep in mind, he didn't say anything or get up from his chair. he just laughed)
not to mention, on the very next play a dallas player ran and jump kicked fabricio oberto in the chest (while he was standing perfectly still with his feet planted) and a foul was called on oberto.
i thought it was blatantly obvious that the refs were trying to make sure the spurs didnt win this game.
to my knowledge, this isn't even an important game. it's not playoffs, and i don't think it even had any effect on seeding.

who cares why it happened; it is a perfect example of how the officiating structure is broken.
why do we continue to use an obviously broken process?
what if this was a playoff game? finals? championship?
is it going to take a botched championship game to force a change here?
what do you guys think?

This is from patrick but i thought it was pertinent and informative:

Duncan then gets personal:

"Joey has a personal problem with me and I can't do anything about that. I said three words to him the entire night and the other words were the two times he gave me technicals, so he's obviously got a personal problem with me."

Crawford mouthed something to Spurs coach Gregg Popovich after he chucked Duncan. Duncan's take on what Crawford said: "Tim knew exactly what he was doing."

And Duncan?: "Joey knew exactly what he was doing. He came into this game with a personal vendetta against me, it had to be, because I didn't do anything the entire game. As I said, I said three words to him and the three words were, 'I got fouled on a shot.' There was one shot I took against Dirk. I pump-faked and got hit on the arm and I said, 'Joey, I got hit on the play.' I probably said it again when I came back down the floor and that's all I said to him the entire game."

Any reason for the vendetta, Tim?

"The last game we played against Indiana I got a tech from him there also. So I kind of imagine it stemmed from that. I don't know what his deal is...I don't know what else they want me to do. If he wants camera time then he's going to call techs and get the camera time he wants. So I don't know what his deal is...I don't have a problem with Joey. Obviously, he's got a problem with me."

OK, it gets better. Here's what Duncan says Crawford said to him during the game:

"He looked at me and said, 'Do you want to fight? Do you want to fight?' I didn't say anything to him anyway. If he wants to fight, we can fight. I don't have any problem with him, but we can do it if he wants to. I have no reason why in the middle of a game he would yell at me, 'Do you want to fight?' "

: Here's ref Joey Crawford's take on his ejection of Tim Duncan. Important to note here that Crawford made these comments before Duncan went off...see blog below for Tim's tirade.

This is what Crawford had to say:

"He was complaining the whole time. And then he went over to the bench and he was over there doing the same stuff behind our back. I hit him with one (technical) and he kept going over there, laughing, and I look over there and he's still complaining. So I threw him out."

Crawford on T'ing up a guy on the bench:

"He's complaining. He was constantly complaining. He was complaining when he was on the court. Then he got on the bench and kept doing the same stuff. So I just ejected him."

Crawford on Duncan saying that he said nothing to warrant the ejection:

"That's his opinion. He said nothing when he was walking off the court and he called me a piece of (blank). Is that nothing?"

Crawford is a piece of (blank). He's always been one of the worst refs in basketball. I think Dallas has something to do with this too. That team has too much history of bad refs.

Crawford is regarded as one of the NBA's top officials but also has a famed temper. In Game 2 of the 2003 Western Conference finals between the Spurs and Dallas, he ejected former Mavericks coach Don Nelson for standing at the scorer's table too long.

I saw it. It was ridiculous. My assumption is that Stern will punish Crawford but will play it relatively low so as to keep a seal any potential soft spots for criticism.

That said, upon replay, it did look as if Duncan & Horry were mocking Crawfords latest foul call (even though it was just through laughs). I don't think it warranted a 'T' ....

Also, in Duncan's defense, I could clearly see him mouth "Fuck You, You're a piece of shit" but it was only after Crawford had ejected him for what seems like a monstrous lack of self-confidence.

If there was ANY doubt SA was going to win it all, I don't think there is any now... unless Crawford calls games 6 & 7 of the DAL series that is.

I'm sure you all saw, but jsut in case. Crawford got suspecded. Indefinately, i think. Pretty sure i heard he will be missing the playoffs.
