What I'm trying to say here...same thing I say about Shaq back when he entered the league. The guy is big...thats about it. When he plays against little people, he scores and gets rebounds, usually at the same time.
When he gets a shot like Amare, then I'll say he's really good at basketball.
just cause you can't shoot like stoy-arc-a-swish doesn't mean you're not really good at basketball.
look at mutumbo. every time he tries to shoot, the other team just laughs at him and gets the ball back.
i'm not saying i disagree with you about howard, but even against a team with no center, its a short list of dudes that can get 20+ and 20+ for even one game in the NBA, much less 2 in a row. shot or no shot.
hehe, alright. Though i don't remember the last time i seen someone get 20-20 in two games(other than howard i mean), and though there are other people that are large in the NBA, i will suspend this argument till he does it on a big guy.
i didn't make up stoy-arc-a-swish. i stole it off of some stupid graphic on a hornets game.
and yea, mutumbo. i think he's really good at basketball. and he cant shoot for crap. in fact, he has maybe the worst hands of anyone in the nba, but i still like having him on my team. is that crazy?
hey patrick, did yao ever get a 20-20 game against toronto? what about 2 in a row? so... i guess that means dwight is better than yao, right? ;)
Let me see if i get this. So, instead of saying what you think, you say something far from it; so as to swing the average of the entire field of comments hence made closer to your actual opinion?
How could i have misunderstood you! (i'm just play'n:D) ======= "He's not even as good as Shaq was at that age"
Howard is 22. When Shaq was 22, he averaged 29.3 and 13.2 and 2.8 blocks. He may be the only 22-year-old to ever do that. So not being as good as Shaq at 22 does not say, well, anything.
==========
I know Yao has excellent midrange; but can he shoot long range like amare (not that i think he would ever need to)? I'll have to take your word for this; i don't see a lot of Yao threes. Why does a center have to be able to shoot as well as Amare to be good again?
==============
Other fantastic players with "no outside shot". Dennis Rodman, Wilt Chamberlain, Moses Malone, Ben Wallace (in his prime of course), Bill Russel, Wes Unseld. Some other i am thinking of, but they would be educated guesses. I never heard anything about Mikan's jumpshot for example. I guess my point is, there is a lot more to basketball then being able to shoot like a PG. I don't think outside shooting is even close to a key qualifier for what makes a great center.
so basically you're saying there's one superstar center and he's on your team.
nice.
i think this may just be a semantic dispute over what "really good" and "superstar" and "dwight howard sucks" mean as phrases.
i feel like i hear what you're saying about dwight i really do. he doesn't have a shot, and so you're hesitant to jump on the bandwagon just because he can get boards and fly like superman. i really do hear that and to a certain extent i have to agree. to say that he is as talented at basketball as, say, ai, would be ludacris. he definitely has some really considerable advantages that were just built into his super human genes.
but doesn't have a shot and not good are miles apart. make a list of guys that can do 20-20 against any (you pick) team in the nba 2 nights in a row. all i'm saying is, its a short freaking list, thats all.
and dwight's definitely way better than yao. especially at shooting. but especially at his hook shot. ok those statements are just plain not believable. i just wish i could see the cringe when shasher reads em haha im a dick
Btw, Howard is 6'11." Just cause you are tall and strong doesn't mean you are a shoe-in for domination. There are a lot of guys as big as howard. They may not all have body's like the Vitruvian Man; but, if all it takes is being large, every NBA team would have a great center. Not just two teams.
Dwight scores and rebounds more than all of the follwing. Camby (6'11", 235), he is definately not short on athleticism. Kamen (7' 265), Tyson chandler (7'1" 235), Dalembert (6'11", 250), Bogut (7', 260), Brad Miller (7, 261), Joel Przybilla (7'1", 255), Jeff Foster (6'11", 250), Mehmet Okur(6'11" 263), Eric Dampier (6'11", 265), Fucking Darko (7', 275), DeSagana Diop (7', 280), Kwame Brown (7', 270), Zaza Pachulia (7'0, 280). This list could go one forever, in fact it did. But most of these guys i named are among the better centers. I didn't even bring in super-scrubs like Loren Woods (7'2", 260) or Jerome James (7'1", 285)
If Dwight just does well cause he is "big...thats about it," shouldn't Yao get in the ballpark of 500 points and 400 rebounds a game? He is eight inches taller than Howard. Swing that eight inches the other way. Picture Dwight being regularly guarded by guys 6'3". I am not dissing Yao in anyway; just using your own argument against him. If Dwight was guarded by dooods 6'3" he would definately have 500 points a game.
Do all the other NBA centers not ever play the "little people" mentioned? Several of these guys are bigger than Dwight.
I will not rest until you say. "i apologize. I am just a hater!" jk:)
When Shaq entered the league, the only thing I really said about him was, "Oh my god! That guy breaks backboards!" I was 11 years old. I guess you were much more precocious than me.
btw, these debates are very amusing timekillers. Don't think i am overly vexed by anything. I just have a lot of fun with these bullsessions. And now that the playoffs are upon us, all i can really think about is basketball. And, the only people i know that talk hoops is you guys.

its almost like you're using "sucks" to mean "pretty good". i really think this whole thread is a semantic battle rather than a discussion about basketball or how talented this guy is.
instead of admitting that the guy has skills and pointing out that his skill set may not live up to all the hype, you just say he sucks and pretend that it's true? i dunno man. i guess i get it, i'm just not going to dis him that hard for not being more skilled than yao or AI.
Sorry, I shouldn't have brought up that relativeness stuff. I'm really talking about his complete set of basketball skills. They are all skewed towards jumping.
If the game weren't geared towards him, he wouldn't have a place in the game.
I guess its really just that I don't like that size has that much affect on the game. Its not really fair.
"If the rules were geared towards a more pure game, Howard's numbers would really suffer."
Talk about an issue of semantics. I really have no idea what is meant by if the game was more "pure". You mean if everyone was jumpless midgets?

Basketball has for many generations been built around big men. Do you want to get rid of posts all together and shrink the paint back down to 6 feet wide? Do you really think that everyone that used their size to their advantage, from Mikan to Wilt were not true basketball players cause they don't have the guard skill set of AI?
Before the argument was he is just big. Now, it is he jsut jumps too well. Other 7 footers could have had higher verticals if they were determined to. It is not like Howard popped out the womb with all his atheltic ability. A lot of it is genes yeah, but a lot of it is hard work too.
Plus, jumping skills are a subset for athletic skills. Are some athletic abilities fair and others not fair?
"I guess its really just that I don't like that size has that much affect on the game. Its not really fair."
The size of the comptitor is key in many sports. Is it okay that height and jumping ability is an advantage is volleyball? Is it okay that height and agility are advantages in Boxing? There is no reason that AI should have to master Abdul-Jabbar's skyhook to be a pure basketball player, and there is no reason Abdul-Jabbar should have to learn AIs crossover to be a pure basketball player.
I can't imagine basketball anyother way. The way a team has players that perform all kinds of roles is one of the reasons i love the game. Everyone taking what they do, putting it together, to become one team operating in perfect harmony. The game would bore me if every team was composed up 12 guards.
"Dwight isnt actually good at basketball like AI is good at basketball."
Now the semantic issue is i don't know what is meant by "basketball". AI certainly doesn't have the postup play of howard. and Howard certainly doesn't have the PG play of AI. But, both basketball.
"Nah, I really think he sucks at basketball. He's just really damn good at jumping and dunking"
Again, sorry, but i am slow. Can someone tell me how jumping and dunking are not a part of basketball?
You must have really hated basketball in the 80s. When there were a lot of guys that couldn't jump or score, they were just enforcers, much like the enforces that are still in Hockey today (though there role has diminished too).
I am not sure Rick Mahorn would have a spot in the NBA if he played today. But in his day, he used what he had to be very effective at influencing a game.
I think Zeke is Dikembe. I have no idea why. But in Rockets games I've heard them call Dikembe "Zeke".
Patrick, you are retarded. Ilgauskus is not that good. If he was as good as Dwight then the Cavs would be WAY better.
Just think what the Cavs would have to give up IN ADDITION to Ilgauskus in a trade for Dwight Howard. That should put it in perspective.
Although I guess that's not really fair since Dwight is 10 years younger. But still. How about Kaman, he is only 3 years older than Dwight. What would the Clippers have to throw in to get Howard for Kaman?
Patrick's just hatin' on Howard like everyone used to hate on Shaq. I can understand the perspective but you've got to think of things, like Patick said himself :), relativistically (probably not a real word...).
All NBA players are all the way to the right, as far as hand/eye coordination & athleticism goes, on the bell curve for their height & weight (the nba superstars are even further right). If they weren't, every huge dude could do what Shaq did & what Howard is doing. Sure there's fewer of them in the population but I bet the ratio of population to NBA is relatively the same as say a 6' 9" 250lb. too (LeBron).
Which makes the comparison to AI absolutely ridiculous. AI is also all the way to right on his bell curves but the population sample for that bell curve is as big as it gets for ANY height/weight combo. HE'S MY SIZE. Have there been any other players in the NBA his size, ever, with even half the track record he's got? I think that makes him more of an anomoly than even Shaq and Howard. To say something like "if A.I. was 7'0" and 300lbs" he'd be the best player in the league just doesn't cut it. One's coordination is (probably exponentially) proportional to the distance of your extremities from your brain so it's impossible to tell. I could just as easily say, if Shaq was 6'7" 240lb, he'd be one of the best guards ever. These are just not scenarios that anyone can accurately gauge.
Howard is extremely gifted. Can he shoot like Amare & Yao? No. But can either of them rebound like he can? No. His shooting may not ever improve (Shaq's didn't much) but given some NBA quality big man coaching (like Kareem w/ Bynum), I could see his game reach a higher level of post up skills than he's got today at least.
Ewing has been an assit. coach in Orlando for a while now. He was brought in to mentor Howard. Also, he has improved good deal on post up skills every year; i don't see any indications that he has hit the ceiling in that regard.
I don't think Mcdyess had a decent jumper in his earlier years, but i know he could jump right out the top of an arena. Maybe Howard will get that 15-17 footer (Or at least 13-15), there is still a ton to learn. =========
One thing about Shaq: I never hear this mentioned anymore, but early in his career, when they were exploring why he is so bad at freethrows. They woudl show that Shaq has an effed-up wrist and can only pull it back a little bit. So no wrist snap, no back spin. Wathc his hand and you'll see he jsut shot-puts it everytime. So howard will probably be a better shotter than Shaq.
==========
Which brings me to one thing i been saying for over a decade. If shaq was smart and didn't have eccessive pride, he would shoot his freethrows granny-style. Just like the Guiness Book of World Records freethrow champ. Backspin is the most natural thing in the world on that kinda shot.
i agree i think AI may be the craziest anomaly we've seen. how many dudes can fit these requirements? 1. multiple arrests for domestic violence 2. multiple arrests for gun related incidents at strip clubs 3. listed as a generous 6 foot and able to F up ANY guard even at the ripe old age of 32
and who can forget the annual "i mean, we're talking about PRACTICE"

Tom, be reasonable. He's playing against a team without a center.
For example, here is a game against Yao...who is actually a center.

I really that that nickname. nice one:)
"When he gets a shot like Amare, then I'll say he's really good at basketball."
1. I am not trying to get you to admit he is "really good." Baby steps. I am just looking for an upgrade from your admission that he sucks.
2. I can't think of any centers in the NBA that can shoot a jumper as good as Amare. SO, do all NBA centers suck at basketball then?
Hey! i have the same birthday as Yao Ming! But i am one year cooler. Just found that out, cause i was wondering how much taller Yao is than Howard.
amare isn't a center anymore.

Yao has a shot as good as Amare, if not better. His hook shot is certainly better.
I wish Houston had to play Toronto 2 times!
Ok, clearly really good and sucks is relative.
I say he sucks to balance out all the rediculus hype he's getting. Is he a superstar center? F no.
He's not even as good as Shaq was at that age, and I would still say that Shaq is just a big oaf.
However, I'll give Howard this: He doesn't run over people like Shaq did...but this is a different NBA.
Let me see if i get this. So, instead of saying what you think, you say something far from it; so as to swing the average of the entire field of comments hence made closer to your actual opinion?
