Ever since he was fired, i been enjoying his commentary. I don't think i knew anything about his personality when he was a coach. But now i have learned what a goofy bastard he is. I mean that in a good way. He is always saying rediculous things. And i love how anytime he thinks someone says something stupid, he completely calls them out.
He joking cuts himself down a lot too, which is pretty funny.

Van Gundy definatly has the best commentary. I just wish he weren't paired with that idiot Mark Jackson.
I ahven't seen Jackson do a lot of games for some reason? Has he been covering very long?
I like reggie miller and there is something cool about the way Marv broadcasts. But lately they have been tag teaming, and i don't really like when it is just them two. Just not enough analysis.
Obviously reggie knows the game well, and he does have insights. But nothing that compares with the coaches (hubie, gundy, collins). And Marv, as we all know, is jsut there to be Marv.
I love when hubie says "what i'd like to see them do is..".. Anything following that setup is gold. He sounds like he is the currant coach of whatever team he is watching. And it is always spot on. Reggie usually points out things i am already noticing. Hubie, enlightens me regularly. Collins too.
Shouldn't Collins be coaching; he has been covering games for a while now. I know lots of teams could use him. Maybe he is waiting for a team that is one of his favs.
I LOVE Doug Collins. He’s been my favorite commentator for a long time for the exact reason you mentioned. He educates me more than any other commentator does. I first noticed him back in the late 90s when he was teamed up w/ Bob Costas as the play-by-play guy. To this day, I think they are the best duo I’ve ever heard do Basketball Games.
That said, I think Coach Collins may be a little... controlling? Rightfully so in my mind but that kind of mindset just doesn’t work with NBA players. They’re adults. They’re spoiled, rich adults who are surrounded by other people in their life who never argue with them. Most of them make more money than the coach themselves which makes the authoritarian coaching style that much less likely to succeed. It takes a star player like Tim Duncan, that’s willing to take harsh criticism, to allow a yelling, I’m-right-do-what-I’m-telling-you type of coach succeed these days. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Coach Pop retire when Duncan does (or within 2-3 years after). Who are the most successful coaches these days? Take one look at Phil Jackson to see how he treats players.
I’d love to see Coach Collins give a go at college ball somewhere; minds that are willing to be shaped and can still see a coach as a guiding figure when he’s yelling rather than a nuisance to their pampered day(s).
A couple other notes about Doug Collins: He was Coach of the MJ Bulls for 3 seasons early in MJ’s career (86-87 to 88-89). The made it one round further each year he coached (1st round, semis, then ECFinals). He was replaced by an older assistant coach of his: Phil Jackson. They rumor was that the young MJ pushed for his firing (probably didn’t like being yelled at for not playing D ). MJ hand picked Doug 13 years later to be head coach of the Wizards for the 2 years MJ returned to the NBA. I’m sure Tom knew but he coached the Pistons in the mid 90s for a few years too.
Other commentators (or studio analysts) that I really enjoy(ed): Van Gundy, Steve Kerr, Greg Anthony, Hubie Brown, Chuck
Great Pairings: Snapper Jones/Bill Walton (Snapper Jones used to be a perpetual state of bewildered frustration by Walton’s over generalizations – it was a great pairing); Costas/Collins; Marv/The Czar;
Those that I seriously dislike: Reggie Miller (Tom- seriously??? I hate watching any game he’s gonna be near!), Danny Ainge, Jalen Rose, Screamin’A (since his success – he used to be ok in small doses and was much more toned down);
Scott skiles was jsut hired to coach bucks the other day. He may be more controlling than Collins, i don't know.
Depending on what i see with the Pistons this year, i might have a spot for DC in detroit. lol. I think this year i will finally determine exactly what i think of Flip. I like him for now, but he seems too soft on his players. But with the limited access fans get to that kinda stuff, it is alwyas hard for me to tell for sure. But if, god forbid, DET has a third year of losing focus, Flip cannot escape some blame.
Haha, i hear ya on Reggie, but somehow, the way he is always hype amuses me instead of annoys me.
I don't hear a lot of Jalen Rose, but i've seen him do the Daily Dime article at least a few times. Basically he either says something retarded, or else uses those 200 or so words to say nothing at all.
Tahts funny about Doug Collins and Jordan. Kinda reminds me of Jackson and Kobe.
As long as i got you, does Kobe still need surgery on that finger?
Yup - they tape it special before every game. They put some sort of small bridge (1/2 a cm or so) between the finger knuckles of the ring & pinkie finger so that his shooting form is relatively normal. For a few games they just taped the two fingers together but he had some tough shooting nights. He admits that as long as it's taped correctly, it doesn't really have much a problem with it. 'Minor pain' I think he called it.
He's planning on having surgery within a couple of days after their season ends to make sure he's healthy for the Olympics this year. He said that even if they win the championship, he'll have enough time.
Cool, glad to know it isn't too much a bother.

I jsut finished the SAS-PHX game 3. Man, Gundy had me roll'n. He has a very strong opinion on everything.
I think my fav from the last game was when he was going on how "fans are strange," cause they were booing the hack-a-shaq.
Wait, no, my fav was when some toher guy brought up that houston was up 0-2 and they lsot last year. gundy was like "thanks, trying to ruin my day? The other doood said something like, i am just pointed out that series and last year Detroit was up 2-0 on CLEV, so PHX is still in this series. Gundy response with, "So PHX can take comfort in my failure?" "Well, i am not coaching SAS, Poppovitch is." Ahhhhhh, hilarious.
yea man i love the old coaches. i think jvg, hubie, and collins all offer great insight. i feel like the old coaches are really the only commentators worth listening to. color guys are stupid to me. i'd rather hear JUST jvg or JUST hubie on a game than that. (hubie kinda sounds like he's comfortable talking to himself anyhow ;) reggie annoys me and if i ever see bill walton on the street he better guard his nads cause my foot is ON THE WAY!
for a while i kept a running list of comical/insane things sean elliot would say but it got to the point where it was taking like 5 hours to watch a game cause i kept having to stop it and write down another ludacris comment. i think he's still my favorite idiot announcer though.
Ahhh, i feel bad for walton, lol. He's such a nice guy. Just a bit lacking in the ol' smarts.
